ZooMontana Receives Two Wolverines

New Phillips 66 Wolverine Exhibit Rounding Completion

BILLINGS, MT - ZooMontana is wrapping up construction on the new Phillips 66 Wolverine habitat and plans to unveil it, and its residents, to a select few who have sponsored the exhibit.  A grand opening to the public will be planned for the beginning of May.  The exhibit is a collaboration of several local businesses that came together for the betterment of ZooMontana and the community of Billings.  The project was spearheaded by Phillips 66 with an initial $50,000 gift in 2014.  Sanderson Stewart followed suit by donating over $20,000 in planning and engineering services.  Shortly thereafter, Hardy Construction agreed to build the Wolverine’s night house labor free, resulting in a donation of over $10,000.  Yellowstone Electric Company, Graybar, Montana Piering and Concrete Lifting, DT Services, Post Frame Specialists and Custom Concrete all donated to the exhibit through materials, equipment and supplies.

The exhibit will house two Wolverines brought over from Finland and Sweden.  The animals are part of a select breeding program through the European Association of Zoos and Aquariums designed to create a genetically diverse population of Wolverines should the wild population decline drastically.  Wolverine populations are known to recover slowly from such population declines.   ZooMontana is one of five U.S Zoos selected for the program.  Zoo Director Jeff Ewelt is excited for the opening.  “Not only does this have wonderful ramifications for the Wolverine population, but it’s a true showcase of how a community can come together to make something happen.  The sponsors of this habitat came through to better not only ZooMontana and Billings, but an entire species.” ZooMontana will be hosting an invite only, VIP tour of the new exhibit with a sneak peek at the animals for the exhibit sponsors.  All media is invited to the VIP tour and is encouraged to attend on Thursday, April 6th at 1pm at ZooMontana.  A public ribbon cutting and official opening of the new exhibit will be planned for the beginning of May
