August 31 is National Eat Outside Day, a perfect excuse to enjoy a meal outdoors, much like our ancestors did long ago.

National Today says humans have always eaten outside and was often associated with hunting. At one point, it was common to feast outside under large tents after a day’s worth of hunting. Americans during the late 1700s to 1800s created pleasure gardens, a private outdoor space for families to enjoy taking a walk, playing games, or enjoying a meal outdoors.

The invention of motor vehicles revolutionized travel for many people. It allowed people to socialize more by having picnics and hosting outdoor activities in areas they had never seen before. National Eat Outside Day is celebrated at the end of August when the weather is usually still nice to enjoy a day outside. Several areas around Montana, including Billings, are expected to reach high temperatures this week with low storm activity. Warmer temps make for a perfect excuse to get outdoors and enjoy a meal while getting fresh air.

Stepping outside and getting some fresh air also boosts energy levels and is great for your mental and physical health. It is also a great way to explore nature. This national holiday also shows that food is not just fuel needed for survival; it can be enjoyable and can make for great memories with others.

How do you celebrate Eat Outside Day? That’s easy – eat outside! Try eating at a park you haven’t explored before. Billings has over 40 parks to choose from that have picnic areas and playgrounds for the kiddos. Or try eating at a restaurant with outdoor seating; a few unique places in Billings with great outdoor seating areas are Diamond X, The Montana Brewing Company, and the Fieldhouse, to name a few. If you have an outdoor space at home, make eating outside a special event. Have a BBQ and enjoy a meal while enjoying the fresh air and spending time with the ones you care about most.

Above all, make National Eat Outside Day special while enjoying amazing food and taking in all the outdoors has to offer!
