The Billings Chamber of Commerce announced the two recipients of the 2022 Legacy Award to the husband and wife team: Jim and Chris Scott. The press release says the couple is well known in the Billings community and Montana for their success in banking, philanthropic work, and involvement with non-profits. The Scotts have called Billings their home for the past 45 years.

Jim and his brother Tom, the Legacy Award Recipient in 2014, helped transform the First Interstate BancSystem into the multi-state banking group it is today. The two changed the bank’s name to First Interstate and were responsible for building the First Interstate Bank Tower in downtown Billings. First Interstate Bank proudly serves customers in 14 states, including Arizona, Washington, and Oregon. Jim was also Chairman of the Board for Billings Chamber of Commerce in 1988.

With Jim gaining banking success, Chris Scott became involved in non-profit work for the community. She conducted a survey with the Landmarks Group for Clark and Minnesota Avenue that helped save the Moss Mansion. This success led to her involvement at the Yellowstone Art Center, now known as the Yellowstone Art Museum. At the time, Chris created the largest capital campaign for the arts. She also held several governance positions for the Nature Conservancy.

Long-held family values have been key to the Scott’s success, helping to give back to the community with their lengthy philanthropic portfolio. The Scotts have worked with many local organizations and non-profits, including Art House Cinema, Alberta Bair Theater, Billings Public Library Foundation, and many more. Their statewide efforts benefit the Montana Community Foundation, the Nature Conservancy and Native American Centers at Montana State University, and the University of Montana. They also support non-profits on the Blackfeet, Northern Cheyenne, and Crow nations through the Foundation for Community Vitality.

“It’s all about what meets us in our heart with what we care about, and we also work with our children now, which is a wonderful part of philanthropy— being able to come together, decide the kind of things we are interested in and give back,” Chris Scott said.

Jim and Chris Scott will be honored for their community work at the 2022 Billings Chamber Annual meeting on September 20 at the Alberta Bair Theater.
