On Tuesday, a public forum for the design concept of a new community recreation center in South Billings drew a massive crowd of community members offering their feedback on what they wanted to see in the new center.
One of the top contender of things people would like to see in the center is an ice skating rink. Members of the project team for the new center were there to answer any questions others had and hear feedback others had.
According to a press release, the input collected from Tuesday night’s open house forum and surveys collected from others in the Billings Community will provide insight into designing the new Recreation Center. One of the unique features of the new community center is that it will feature an indoor pool.
Kory Thomson, the superintendent of recreation for Billings Parks and Recreation, says creating this new recreation center will also be a great benefit for the community.
“I think it’s an investment in kids, families, and our active senior population. As our community ages, a lot of the folks now want to remain active. It’s going to increase opportunities for our community to get involved in recreation and sports,” Thomson said in a press release.
Research from the National Parks and Recreation Associations 2022 Agency Performace Review shows that two indoor recreation centers are needed based on the size of the Billings community.
The first meeting for the project’s plan took place four years ago, but the COVID-19 pandemic affected the completion of the plan. As of last December, the project’s master plan was adopted last December by the Billings City Council.
Based on the turnout from Tuesday night’s public forum, it seems clear that the community is ready for a new recreation center.
