You can also sit by the Upper Missouri river and take in the spacious view.
The Bitterroot valley area has small towns with big adventures and plenty to do during the fall. Fish on the Bitterroot River with 14 Fishing Access Sites throughout the valley. Take a hike in the Bitterroot Mountains or explore the Daly Mansion Museum and see the Margaret Daly Arboretum, an outdoor walkway with breathtaking views of the Sapphire and Bitterroot Mountains. The trees leading to the museum will also have beautiful yellow, orange, red, and gold hues.
Whitefish, Montana, was named one of the best places in the country to see fall foliage by NBC. Needless to say, this town is a must-see year-round, and autumn is no different. Sightsee this quaint town, exploring local shops, distilleries, and breweries. There are also plenty of fall hiking opportunities, like at the Memorial Hiking Trail or the Whitefish Trail. Or try fly fishing in the Flathead River system.
Big Fork is another great place to see fall foliage with towns to do in and around the town during the fall. There are hunting and fishing spots for those who are licensed; go alone or hire a guide to come along. There are also opportunities to camp at the Flathead Lake Resort, Blue Bay Campground, or the Outback Montana R.V. Park. Big Fork also has a downtown Halloween celebration from 4-6 and is a great community event.
While it may be harder to visit before the first snowfall hits, Glacier National Park is another great place to take in the beautiful fall colors. Drive or bike on Going-to-the-sun Road, which provides a beautiful view of fall colors. You can also take in the beauty of fall by visiting Lake Mcdonald and the Bowman lake area. Night closures of the road are in place; check the park’s website when planning your visit.
