Billings Police Department provides update on West High internet threat

On 10/21/2020, the Billings Police Department (BPD) joined investigative efforts with the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) regarding a tip received by the FBI about shooting to take place at West High School on October 26th. The tip stemmed from an interaction and comments in online chat room.

The BPD and FBI continue to actively investigate the information received and attempt to develop actionable leads. The threat remains anonymous, uncorroborated, and so far has lacked credibility to indicate an imminent threat.

Despite, BPD and FBI efforts over the last two (2) days, we have been unable to develop actionable leads. We will continue investigative efforts through the weekend with any new information that is developed.

At this time, a threat assessment leads us to believe the threat credibility is low. Despite a low threat assessment, a threat in fact was made none the less and we have prepared a plan of action. The BPD has coordinated with SD2 to strategically increase Law Enforcement Resources in and around facilities in the event the assessment is incorrect.

The BPD believes the planned response is appropriate and adequate to deter, prevent, or if needed quickly respond to any potential threat while allowing normal school functions to occur.
We ask the public to remain calm, thoughtful, and follow any additional directives from SD2 officials.
