Open House Scheduled to Discuss Sidewalk and Shared-Use Path in Columbus

Billings Area Highlights

COLUMBUS, MONTANA (December 19, 2019) – The Montana Department of Transportation (MDT) welcomes the community to attend an open house for the sidewalk and shared-use path project proposed in Columbus. The open house will be held Tuesday, January 14th from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. at the Columbus City Hall, Council Meeting Room, 2nd Floor (408 East 1st Avenue North)

The open house is designed to be an informal event for residents to meet the MDT project team managing this project. As such, no structured program will be presented. Information regarding alternative design concepts for the project and more will be available.

Proposed work includes construction of ADA-compliant sidewalks and a shared-use path.  The purpose of the project is to provide a city-wide connection to trail systems and parks located north, south, and west of Columbus. The project will consist of three segments:

  1. Granite Peak Park on the west side of Montana Highway 78 (MT-78), at reference post 47.6 and extends south along the west side of MT-78 for approximately a half mile to East Pike Avenue at reference post 47.0.  The sidewalk then follows Pike Avenue on the north side for approximately 700 feet to the intersection with Diamond Street at reference post 46.9.
  1. West side of MT-78 at the intersection with East 1st Avenue South at reference post 46.4 and follows MT-78 south for approximately 0.2 mile to end on the east side of the highway at Itch-Kep-Pe Park at reference post 46.2. A crossing of MT-78 will be provided in this segment.
  1. The north side of Secondary Highway 306 (East Pike Avenue) and runs approximately 950 feet between Quarry Street at reference post 0.4 to existing sidewalk mid-block on East Pike Avenue between 2nd Street and North 3rd Street at reference post 0.2.

Completion of segments 1 and 2 in their entirety, are dependent on funding.  Public input will be considered when prioritizing both sidewalk and shared-use path to be completed within segments 1 and 2.

The project is being funded with Federal Highway Administration Transportation Alternative funds and City of Columbus matching funds.   Construction is tentatively planned for 2021 depending on completion of design phases and availability of funds.

An important part of properly planning for future projects is partnering with the community. The Montana Department of Transportation welcomes the public to provide ideas and comments on the proposed project.
