It is almost time for cooler weather and snow, which means it is time to start planning ski trips. Visit Montana lists all 15 ski areas in the state that are perfect winter destinations. While most are closed, they are only months away from opening for the 2022-2023 season. Here are the top five ski resorts in Montana to visit this season.

Red Lodge Mountain – Red Lodge, Montana 

Skiers and snowboarders can start preparing for the winter season on Red Lodge Mountain open in Late November. The ski area has 71 runs across two mountains in the Beartooth Mountains. Ski and snowboard rentals and lessons are also available for those new to skiing or snowboarding. Get a season pass that offers discounts during your visit. Once open, the ski area operates from 9 am – 4 pm through Sunday. 

Big Sky Resort – Big Sky, Montana 

With over 5,000 acres to ski, Big Sky resort is a fantastic family-friendly resort. Enjoy a day of skiing or snowboarding, then cozy up in the lovely resort with breathtaking mountain views. The quaint mountain village also has a solace spa and plenty of dining and shopping options. The resort also has all kinds of lessons and programs to choose from. The 2022-2023 winter season for Big Sky Resort begins on November 24 through April 23. Plan your trip early to ensure a quality experience at this amazing resort. 

Showdown Mountain – Neihart, Montana

This ski area is another great place for families and groups. Showdown mountain has lessons and rentals available, as well as other mountain amenities like a saloon, coffee shop, and cafe. There is also a hotel to stay at for those who want to stay for longer than one day. All amenities open when the 2022-2023 season begins. The winter season starts December 9 through April 2, excluding Christmas day. Have an opportunity to ski with Santa on Christmas Eve! Showdown Mountain is open Monday and Tuesday starting January 2 until closing day on April 2. Lifts are open from 9:30 am to 4 pm. 

Bridger Bowl Ski Area – Bozeman, Montana

This nonprofit ski area has been in business for the last 60 years, with areas to ski for beginners and experienced skiers or snowboarders. Group and private lessons are also available. There are two conveyer lifts, a chair lift, and a cozy warming hut. The ski area has 2,000 acres of skiable terrain. The average snowfall at Bridger Bowl is 300 inches. The winter season starts December 9 through April 9, 2023. Lift operations are from 9 am to 4 pm and 10 am to 4 pm on Christmas Day.

Great Divide – Marysville, Montana

Known as Montana’s sunniest ski area, the Great Divide is unique since it is located on the Continental Divide. Great Divide is known for winter half-priced passports with season passes and ski rentals available too. The Mountain has five ski chair lits and 1,500 acres, and more than 100 trails to ski through. Opening day for the winter season should be announced soon.
